Common Questions

These FAQs can help clarify the unique benefits and structure of Equine-Assisted Learning, making it easier for participants to understand how EAL can support their personal or group development goals.

EAL benefits Veterans and Retired First Responders of all ages. It improves confidence, social skills, emotional resilience, and communication abilities. Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) offers our heroes therapeutic support, fostering healing and resilience through unique interactions with horses.

EAL is typically a ground-based program, unlike therapeutic riding, which involves horseback riding for physical or therapeutic benefits. Participants interact with horses through non-riding activities designed to support learning and self-discovery.

EAL benefits individuals of all ages, including children, teens, and adults. It improves confidence, social skills, emotional resilience, and communication abilities. EAL is often used for team-building, youth development, and personal growth.

EAL sessions include activities such as leading, grooming, and observing horses and structured exercises that encourage interaction and teamwork. Activities are tailored to encourage problem-solving, self-awareness, and communication skills..

No experience with horses is necessary. Our Programs Managers guide participants and ensure a safe, comfortable environment for all. The focus is on personal and emotional growth rather than technical horse knowledge.

EAL promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, fostering healing, and communication. The presence of horses encourages a non-judgmental, reflective space, often helping participants better understand themselves and others.

Horses are naturally intuitive and respond to human emotions and behaviors, creating immediate feedback for participants. Their reactions encourage participants to adjust their approach, fostering awareness and adaptability.

A session may begin with a brief introduction and a warm-up activity with the horses. The main activity targets specific goals, like building trust or improving trauma healing. Afterward, participants debrief with the Program Manager to discuss insights and experiences.

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions are designed to be immersive and enriching, typically lasting two hours each. By attending six consecutive Self-Care Saturday sessions, participants can be evaluated for entry into specialized classes, including Women, Men, or Natural Horsemanship tracks. These classes extend over 4-6 weeks, offering a comprehensive journey of personal growth and skill development in a supportive environment.

No special equipment is needed. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, jeans or long pants, and closed-toe shoes/boots, and be prepared to learn in an outdoor ranch environment.

Yes, safety is a top priority. Our trained facilitators supervise every session, and all activities are designed to be safe and supportive. Participants receive an orientation on safety around horses.

Individual growth is nurtured within a collaborative setting. While we don't provide individual sessions, each group experience is tailored to ensure personal attention and meaningful engagement. This approach allows participants to benefit from shared insights and interactions while focusing on their unique journey.

The generous donations of individuals, companies, grants, foundations, and trusts fund program participation costs for our Veterans and Retired First Responders. Organizations seeking to reserve a team-building or company outing can contact us at outreach@henryshomesanctuary.org for program costs.
