Transforming Lives Through Equine-Assisted Healing: An Endorsement of Henry’s Home, Horse and Human Sanctuary

I am writing to express my unequivocal endorsement of Henry’s Home, Horse and Human Sanctuary, an exceptional equine-assisted learning facility dedicated to serving veterans and first responders. As a mental health clinical social worker, I have had the opportunity to work with Henry’s Home and bring a group of veterans to participate in a twelve-week program at the sanctuary, specifically designed (with the help of Henry’s excellent staff) for veterans facing mental health challenges, including PTSD, sexual trauma, depression, and anxiety.

From the outset, many of the veterans in this program exhibited significant reluctance to engage—both with one another and with the horses. Their initial concerns centered around the fear that the horses would somehow sense their struggles and react negatively. This apprehension was reflective of their broader mental health issues; they were often closed off, hesitant to ask for help, and unsure of how to express their needs and emotions.

However, over twelve weeks, I witnessed a remarkable transformation. The program at Henry’s Home provided a safe, nurturing environment that fostered trust and connection. The veterans gradually began to open up through guided interaction with the horses and thought-provoking activities structured by dedicated staff and volunteers.

Moreover, I have observed a significant decrease in both observable and self-reported anxiety levels among the veterans participating in the program. Through their interactions with the horses, many report feeling a profound sense of safety and protection, likely for the first time in their adult lives. This realization is pivotal for their emotional healing and foundational for understanding and articulating what it means to genuinely feel safe, protected, and secure in their surroundings.

An essential aspect of the program is its focus on mindfulness and being present in one’s body. The veterans are learning to connect with their physical selves, recognizing and attuning to their bodily sensations and emotional responses. By observing and mirroring the horses’ physical language and breathing, they have developed a deeper understanding of emotional regulation and self-awareness. This has positively impacted their ability to manage anxiety and regulate their emotions more effectively.

By the end of the program, the change in the participants was profound. They expressed vulnerabilities about their mental health struggles in a way that I had not seen at the beginning of the program. Veterans who once shied away from asking for help became more willing to share their thoughts and feelings with their peers and during the arena activities. They developed a genuine rapport with the horses, recognizing the unique bond that can exist between humans and animals. The sanctuary’s approach enabled them to face their fears about equine interaction and fortified their sense of belonging and support within the group.

The program’s impact extends beyond equine-assisted learning. It cultivates resilience, empowerment, and a sense of community among veterans who have faced numerous challenges. The sanctuary creates a space where participants can confront their traumas non-threateningly, engage in meaningful relationships, and learn the importance of asking for help—a crucial skill for anyone on the path to healing.

I wholeheartedly recommend Henry’s Home, Horse, and Human Sanctuary for its invaluable work with veterans. The transformative experience I witnessed throughout the twelve-week program is a testament to the effectiveness of their unique approach. Organizations like Henry’s Home play a critical role in supporting our veterans’ mental health and well-being, helping them to rediscover hope and strength.
