Reins of Hope: A Woman Veteran’s Journey to Healing Through Natural Horsemanship

Healing comes in many forms, but for the women veterans who join our natural horsemanship program, it often begins with the gentle touch of a horse, the trust they inspire, and the moments of personal reflection that follow. This program is uniquely designed to support women veterans by combining equine-assisted learning with a compassionate space for emotional growth. Today, we’re honored to share a profoundly moving testimonial from one of our participants. Her story is one of resilience, vulnerability, and transformation—a testament to the power of the horse-human connection.

Dear Krista,

This is Shirley,

I was one of the veterans participating in equine-assisted learning with the Houston VA.

I just wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for the transformative horse therapy session. Interacting with the horses (Dusty, Henry, Irish, William, Willie Nelson, Avatar, and the other horses) along with your guidance was mighty.

The experience with Henry’s Home helped me deal with a trigger I had experienced the day before…PTSD from MST (Military Sexual Trauma). I was sexually attacked by (name removed) while serving in the Army. For years, I just tried to have the “shake it off soldier mentality.”

However, unhealed trauma made me overindulge in alcohol to mask the pain and anxiety and eventually fall into depression.

Your expertise and compassionate approach created a safe space for emotional growth. I appreciate the effort you put into our equine experience. Afterward, I had an improved mood. Thank you for being so dedicated to equine-assisted therapy. I’m eager to continue exploring the healing potential of the horse-human connection at Henry’s Home!

Sincerely,

Shirley

Women veterans face unique challenges after service, and the numbers are staggering. According to research, approximately one in three women veterans have experienced Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and women are nearly twice as likely as male veterans to develop PTSD. The invisible wounds of trauma often lead to struggles with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Programs like ours offer a powerful alternative path to recovery. Horses can pick up on human emotions, creating a space where participants feel seen, validated, and supported.

These interactions promote emotional healing and build confidence, provide tools for managing stress, and foster hope for the future.
